Samson Flexor - As Bailarinas

O pintor romeno naturalizado brasileiro Samson Flexor (1907 – 1971) produziu obras tanto figurativas como abstratas. Expressionista, influenciando pelo cubismo, retratista excepcional, a marca registrada de Flexor é o emprego da geometria em seus quadros. No Brasil, onde se radicou depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, passou a considerar que a pintura deveria expressar-se por si mesma e não ser mera cópia da natureza, abraçando a partir de então (mas não exclusivamente) a arte abstrata. Com isso em mente, em 1951 fundou o Atelier Abstração, o primeiro grupo de arte abstrata do Brasil. As Bailarinas, de 1950, sintetiza bem os elementos que sobressaem na obra de Flexor: geometria, cor e luz.

The Romanian born Brazilian painter Samson Flexor (1907 - 1971) produced both figurative and abstract works. An expressionist influenced by Cubism, an exceptional portraitist, Flexor's trademark is the use of geometry in his paintings. In Brazil, where he settled after the Second World War, Flexor began to consider that the painting should express itself by itself and not be a mere copy of nature. From this moment on he embraced (but not exclusively) abstract art. With this in mind, in 1951 he founded the Atelier Abstração (“Atelier Abstraction”), the first group of abstract art in Brazil. The Dancers, 1950, synthesizes the elements that stand out in Flexor’s work: geometry, color and light.
